WYNNETTE YANCEY WILKINS, age 93, of 3018 Lawson Chapel Church Road, Roxboro, NC passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, February 14, 2024 at Roxboro Assisted Living.
Mrs. Wilkins was born March 17, 1930 in Person County, NC, daughter of the late Theopelous “Thea” Wright Yancey & Anna Lee Dixon Yancey and was wife of 55 years to the late Billy Wilkins. She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.
Miss Wynnette loved planting and tending flowers, gardening, watching birds, bowling, traveling, shopping, going out to eat, and the traditional Baptist Hymns. Most of all, she loved her family and friends.
Miss Wynnette graduated from Bethel Hill High School in 1949. Miss Wynnette worked at Rose's Dime Store while in high school and after high school at Collins & Aikman Corp. as a weaver. After marrying, Miss Wynnette and Billy moved to Spring Lake, NC, just outside of Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) where she worked in a retail store before she started having children. She later worked as an Avon Representative. Eventually Miss Wynnette became a rural letter carrier. After 20 years, Miss Wynnette retired from the US Postal Service in 1992.
Surviving are three children, Donna L. Wilkins, Dean R. Wilkins & wife, Sylvia, Dwain R. Wilkins & wife, Patricia, four grandchildren, Ashley Lauren Wilkins-Tew & husband, Larry Wayne, Alan Spencer Wilkins & wife, Katherine Elizabeth, Evan Grey Wilkins, Alexis Anne Wilkins Schmid & husband, Eric John, six great-grandchildren, Ava Grey Tew, William James Tew, Aurora Eloise Wilkins, Nova Eileen Wilkins, Parker John Schmid, Dawson Alan Schmid, brother, Talmadge Yancey, and sister, Rose Y. Clayton.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Wilkins is preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Yancey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Olive Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Victor Blackwell officiating. The family will receive friends and guests from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church and Friday, March 8, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Olive Branch Baptist Church Building Fund, 7588 Dirgie Mine Road, Roxboro, NC 27574.
