Sallie Bet (Hazelwood) Powell

SALLIE BET HAZELWOOD POWELL, age 96, of Wake Forest, NC and formerly of Roxboro, NC, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2026 at the Hock Family Pavilion.  Mrs. Powell was born January 22, 1930 in Halifax County, VA, daughter of the late John Anderson Hazelwood & Dora Mae Hazelwood, and was wife of 52 years to the late Calvin Coolidge Powell.  She was a homemaker and was a member of East Roxboro Church of God.

Sallie enjoyed being with her family and her church family.

Surviving are four children, Ronald G. Powell, Gary D. Powell & wife, Rene all of Roxboro, NC, Vickie P. Harp & husband, Rodney of Wake Forest, NC, Lupino P. Wesley & husband, Curtis of Roxboro, NC, two brothers, John Richard Hazelwood of South Boston, VA, Harvey B. Hazelwood & wife, Kay of Lynch Station, VA, twenty-five grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Powell is preceded in death by three children, Mark Andrew Powell, Sr., Calvin Dodson Powell, Danet P. Irby, three sisters, Virla H. Mills, Minnie H. Powell, Virginia H. Irby, two grandsons, Ray Foster, Mark Andrew Powell, Jr., great-grandson, Dylan Martin, sister-in-law, Levern Hazelwood, and daughter-in-law, Debra Powell.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2026 at East Roxboro Church of God with Pastor Curtis Wesley & Rev. Stuart Aycock officiating.  Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2026 at Strickland and Jones Funeral Services and other times at the home of Gary Powell, 1227 Hugh Woods Road, Roxboro, NC.  

Pallbearers will be Donald Brown, Daniel Harp, David Harp, Joseph Harp, Ronnie Powell, Jr., Andrew Strouth, Jonathan Wesley, and Joshua Wesley.
