Robert Julian Brooks, Jr., 86, of Roxboro, NC, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, December 4, 2025, surrounded by the unwavering love of his family. He left this world with the same quiet, unassuming strength and courage that defined his life.
Born in Prospect Hill, NC, on February 5, 1939, Robert—known fondly as “Bubba”—was the son of the late Robert Julian Brooks, Sr. and Garnette Powell Brooks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 53 years, India Russell Brooks, and his sister, Joyce Brooks Wade.
Robert is survived by his three children: Robert J. Brooks III of Wilmington, NC; Timothy L. Brooks (Lisa) of Timberlake, NC; and Tabitha E. Brooks (Bobby Williams) of Sneads Ferry, NC. He was affectionately known as Papa Brooks to his three grandsons—Travis Brooks (Ryan), Hunter Brooks (Miranda Davis), and Jarrett Brooks (Elissa)—and found immense joy in his two great-granddaughters, Cameron and Olivia Brooks. He also leaves behind his two loving sisters Yvonne Crabtree and Ann Wade, brother-in-law Mitchell Russell and a special niece, who was like a second daughter to him, Ramona Russell Woodson. Many other nieces and nephews remain to cherish the special memories they made with Uncle Bubba.
Robert retired from CP&L after more than two decades as a supervisor foreman for the plant’s traveling maintenance crew. Known for his integrity, fairness, and keen sense of humor, he was remembered by coworkers as a joy to work with and be around. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy and later retired from the Naval Seabees Reserve in 1999—experiences that fostered his deep love of country and gifted him lifelong friendships. A devout man of faith, Robert was an active member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church. Over the years, he faithfully served as a church trustee and contributed his time to the Deacon Board, Pulpit Committee, Building and Grounds Committee, and Finance Committee.
In retirement, Robert found happiness in simple pleasures: spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle, fishing, and mowing any yard he was allowed to mow. His true happy place, however, was his favorite chair with an old western on the TV and a cup of coffee in hand.
A worshipful Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, at Bethel Hill Baptist Church located at 201 Old US 501 Hwy, Roxboro, NC 27574 with the Rev. Jason Evans, and the Rev. Mark Alexander officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the fellowship hall. The family will receive friends and guest from 12:00 pm till 5:00 pm on Thursday & Friday, December 11 & 12, 2025 at the home of Timothy & Lisa Brooks, 1650 Chambers Loop Road, Timberlake, NC.
