Rennis's story.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rennis Edwin Puryear Sr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Rennis peacefully passed away at Duke Regional Hospital in hospice care on November 30, 2024, at the age 85, his loving wife, Sheryl "Bee" Puryear was by his side. He fought the long courageous battle with dementia, after his diagnosis in 2017, with resilience and perseverance.
Born on January 18, 1939, in Roxboro, North Carolina, Rennis grew up with a passion for the fast cars, working on large grading equipment, mechanics, outdoors, and a deep love for his family. After graduating from Bethel Hill High School in 1956, he went on to serve his country in the United States Army National Guard where he earned commendations for his dedication. After his service, Rennis attended Durham Technical Institute obtaining his Associates Degree in Applied Sciences in Electronics Engineering Technology, in May 1972. Rennis was a Master Mason, as well as belonging to the Scottish Rite and York Rite from 1983 - 2024.
Rennis began a long career as an Electrical Superintendent, and after many years he retired from Halliburton. Retirement was short lived as he went back to work with Construction Control Services, retiring as a Project Manager in 2004. Known for his meticulous work ethic, he played a key role in several successful electrical projects. His colleagues as well has his family and friends often referred to him as "the man who could fix anything."
Outside of work, Rennis was often referred to as Captain Ren Ren of the Mayo Lake Redneck Yacht Club. If he was not on his boat "Easy on the Mayo", you would find him on his beloved backhoe or milling on his personal sawmill. He was also an avid NASCAR fan who would attend races with his RV in tow, participate in charity golf events, and was a Master Griller of Brisket, which his family and friends thoroughly enjoyed, and was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church. Last but not least, Rennis also had his private pilot license (PPL).
Rennis is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Sheryl "Bee" Puryear; his three children, Terry Lynn Puryear, Rennis Edwin Puryear, JR (Susan) and Wendy Puryear Livingston; his three grandchildren, Shane (Christie), Stephanie, Tabitha (Christian) and 9 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; his five siblings, Peggy Mooney (Sam), Philip Puryear (Lynda), Tommy Puryear (Wanda), Tammy Puryear (Larry), Jacky Puryear (Kendra) . He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward and Velma Mildred (Gentry) Puryear and sister, Janice Marie Puryear.
A special thanks to his caregiver, Ms. Audrey Parker who affectionately nicknamed him "HOT ROD".
Rennis's family invites you to celebrate his life at a memorial service on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Sam Mooney, Rev. Tommy Puryear and Sonia B. Carver officiating. The family will receive friends and guests for one hour prior to the service and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Rennis's honor to the Triple Springs Volunteer Fire Department, 185 Olive Branch Road, Roxboro, NC 27574. Honorary pallbearers will be Barney Poole, Barry Poole, Billy Puckett, Nate Carver, Roger Harris, Tee Gaulden, and Terry Gentry.
Rennis will be remembered for his infectious smile, integrity, generosity, his dedication to family, and his unwavering love for his BeeBee. He will be deeply missed by all who know him and his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
