Rachel Phoebe (Allen) Martin

Rachel Phoebe Allen Martin (88) of Hurdle Mills, NC passed away Saturday morning, December 11, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.  Rachel was the youngest born of the late Ira Greene Allen and the late Joie Broach Allen on September 14, 1933.  She was born in the Bushy Fork community, at home, and lived her entire life not far from her birthplace.  She was wife of 70 years to the late W.L. Martin, Jr.

After graduating from Roxboro High School, she entered Watts LPN School in Durham, North Carolina.  She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for 19 years at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro, North Carolina.  Rachel started nursing on the General Floor and Emergency Department before she decided to return to school to obtain a diploma in nursing.  She attended Danville School of Nursing in Danville, Virginia, where she received a diploma in nursing and her license to be a Registered Nurse.  As a Registered Nurse, she was able to serve as a supervisor in the hospital and work on various units.  Her favorite units were the Emergency Department and Labor and Delivery.  Rachel worked as a nurse for 40 years and loved being a nurse and caring for her patients.  She was always a patient advocate and had their well-being as her top priority. 

Mrs. Martin is survived by her children: Josie Bowman, of Greenville, NC, Billy Martin (Dawn) of Hurdle Mills, NC, Betsy Paul (Ray) Ann Davis (Jerry) all of Roxboro, NC, Jennifer Milam of Hurdle Mills, NC and Jeffrey Martin (Lorie) of Morganton, NC, fifteen grandchildren, Michael, Michele, and Brett Bowman, Will, and Dusty Martin, Erin Shelton, Dana Paul, Jason, Sarah, and Drew Davis, Allen, and Ben Milam, Elizabeth Eastwood, Joey and Megan Martin, six great grandchildren, Conard, Sophie, and Oakes Martin, Darcy Shelton, Madison and Gavin Milam, and special cousins, June Allen Rogers, Alfred Snipes, and Ermina Hester Hite. 

In addition to her parents and husband Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond Allen, Sue Allen, Newman Allen, Evelyn Allen Eggert, Marguerite Sharlow, and Sarah Lea.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2021 in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Wilkerson officiating.  Interment will follow in the Clement Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 6:00 till 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2021 at the funeral home and other times at the home, 1060 Snipes Road, Hurdle Mills, NC.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons. 

The family would like to offer their sincerest thanks to Dr. Godwin, and his nurse Martha for the care they provided during her later years.  Sincerest thanks would also like to be expressed to her caregivers throughout the past few years including Judy Eichorn, Penny Cole, and Tammy Thomas.
