JESSE CORNELIUS BOWES, SR., age 90, of 2587 Chub Lake Road, Roxboro, NC passed away peacefully Friday morning, February 9, 2024 at his home.
Mr. Bowes was born December 14, 1933 in Person County, NC, son of the late Golden Cornelius Bowes, Sr. & Jenny Bett Vicks Bowes and was husband of 67 years to Shirley Virginia Clayton Bowes who survives. He was previous owner of Bowes & Bowes Store in Alton, VA, attended Oak Grove Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men and the choir, served on the Board of Trustees and the Fellowship committee, and was a veteran of the US Army and the US Air Force where he served during the Korean Conflict.
Jesse enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, gardening, playing the guitar and singing, but was happiest when he was working.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Terri B. Palmer & husband, Ricky of Roxboro, NC, Jesse C. “Connie” Bowes, Jr. & wife, Maria of Belmont, NC, Jeff T. Bowes & wife, Melinda of Roxboro, NC, Lori B. Carroll & husband, Jon of Carolina Beach, NC, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, brother, Golden Cornelius “J.B.” Bowes, Jr. of Alton, VA, brother-in-law, Wallace Clayton, and a host of nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowes is preceded in death by six sisters, Lessie Bowes, Edith Bowes, Doris Smith, Margie Wilburn, Ellen Hall, Mary Alice Bowes, and two brothers, James Bowes, and Roy Bowes.
Celebration of Life services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Oak Grove Church with the Rev. Johnny Ray Tucker and the Rev. Daniel Pantoja officiating. The family will receive friends and guests from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
