Jean Rachel Martin Talley so loved her role as a Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Beloved Nana, cherished family member and friend, but the title she held closest to her heart was Child of God. Our most faithful disciple and dedicated prayer warrior departed her earthly home on March 19, 2025 and is now rejoicing on the streets of gold in reunion with loved ones who went on to Glory before her, including her husband and our sweet Papa, Bill. Among those closest to her remaining here on Earth to miss her sweet smile, kind words and daily prayers include her daughter, Dawn, her son-in-law, Jonathan, and her precious grandchildren, Hunter, Cody, and Logan.
Jean was born to her loving parents, Carrie and Howard Martin, on October 5, 1940 in Person County, North Carolina. A proud member of the Sappony Indian Tribe, Jean was the older sister to Juanita, Barbara (Frankie), Gordon (Donna) and Norman, and the younger sister to Edith, Lee, Billy Howard, and John Gaston, all of whom predeceased her with the exception of Barbara and Gordon. With a family unit rich in love and respect, Jean worked closely with her family in farming their land in Person County for many years while also assisting with the caregiving of her younger siblings. During this time, she was dedicated to growing in her faith as a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roxboro, North Carolina where she sang in the youth choir, served as president of the Young Women’s Association, and asked Christ into her heart at age 13.
An avid learner devoted to expanding her knowledge, Jean graduated at the top of her high school class at High Plains Indian School in 1959. Her gregarious personality impacted so many during her formative years, and it was this energy that caught the eye of a tall and handsome young man, Bill Talley. Shortly after her high school graduation, she and Bill were married at Calvary Baptist Church and they moved to Arden, Pennsylvania where they were embraced by family already in the area. It was in Arden that she realized the joy she experienced being around young children which prompted her initial foray into early childhood education, a field to which she would return after the birth of her grandchildren.
After a brief period of time ‘up North,’ Jean and Bill packed up their belongings and headed south, stopping in Richmond, Virginia where they made their home for many years. Upon settling into their home, Jean took a position with AJD Corporation where she worked for 28 years with her sister-in-law, Bea, who along with Jean’s sister-in-law, Evelyn, survive her. It was during this time in Richmond that her family grew to three when she and Bill became the parents of Dawn.
Motherhood came naturally to Jean who poured her heart and soul into raising Dawn in a strong Christian home. Jean and her family joined Branch’s Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in other social activities. Her ability to meet someone where they were in life drew so many to rely on Jean’s wisdom, kind words and prayers.
Upon retirement from AJD, Jean and Bill relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to be near their daughter and her family. Not being content to be inactive, Jean returned to her first career in early childhood education when she joined KinderCare Learning Center as the lead infant teacher in 1996, and she retired in 2018 after 22 years. As noted in her biography at KinderCare, “Jean is a bit of an institution in Chapel Hill. Her energetic, loving, enthusiastic care makes parents feel the utmost confidence as they leave their children each day secure in the knowledge they will have a great day of fun and exploration.” She was truly in her element when working with children and mentoring the many families who looked to her for guidance. In fact, you could often find these new parents sitting with Jean just to learn and gain confidence in their parenting skills from their child’s ‘Chapel Hill Grandmother.’
Hunter, Cody, and Logan each had the opportunity to spend extra time with their Nana at KinderCare until they began elementary school. Afternoons with Nana would frequently involve special snacks and playtime outside. Jean would often say she was the luckiest Nana in the world, but Hunter, Cody, and Logan would say they were the lucky ones!
Jean would often be found on the sidelines of every pitch, field, and court in and around Chapel Hill cheering on one or more of her dear grandchildren and, when not spending time with family outside of the home, she could be found inside creating special meals including her famous oven fried chicken, macaroni salad, banana pudding with real meringue and/or peach fried pies.
Her later years were filled with long phone calls with family and friends, word search puzzles, Hallmark television and a robust card ministry. She loved to share her joy, her love of the Lord and her positivity until an unexpected medical event in early 2025.
The family wants to thank the caring and capable staff at UNC Medical Center, UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care, and Peak Resources Brookshire for their time, attention, and wonderful care of our sweet Nana. For friends and family who took the time to visit in person, by phone or through wonderful cards, your kindness and caring ways meant so very much to us all!
To our sweet Jean, Mom and Nana, you were so easy to love! Our hearts ache that you are no longer physically present with us, but we are filled with joy knowing you are once again made whole! Until we see you again in His Mighty Kingdom, we will always remember we are your darlings whom you loved to the moon and back!
