BURLEY THOMAS “TOMMY” DAY, JR. age 83, of 45 Tee Court, Roxboro, NC died Sunday morning, August 1, 2021 at his residence.
Mr. Day was born May 7, 1938 in Person County, NC, son of the late Burlie Thomas Day Sr. & the late Louise Long Day and was husband of 61 years to Nancy Lorraine Eller Day who survives. He was retired from the Person County School System after 30 years of service in education and coaching and was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church. Coach Day enjoyed golfing and was a member of Roxboro Country Club where he was club champion.
Coach Day graduated from Roxboro High School. He attended Appalachian State University where he earned a BS degree in Mathematics, and Health & Physical Education. He was football manager and on the golf team. He served as class president for four years. He earned a Master’s Degree in Drivers Education from N.C. A & T State University. He taught in Rowan, Robeson and Davidson Counties before returning to Roxboro to help with the family business (Roxboro Dry Cleaning) in 1971. He resumed teaching and coaching in 1974 at Southern Junior High School and then moved to Person Senior High School where he taught math and drivers education. He was the head basketball coach from 1984 until his retirement in 1994. Through his great leadership, he touched the lives of many young people in the county and taught them great character and values.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, J. Bradley Day & wife, Pam, and Kimberlyn Day, four grandchildren, McKendree Day Yeager, Barrett Day, Mary Catherine Day Melton, and Leanna Day.
In addition to his parents Mr. Day is preceded in death by a son, Burley Thomas Day III.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ed Priestaf officiating. Family will receive friends and guests 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Long Memorial United Methodist Church prior to the service.
