Alfred "Al" Ballard Cox, Jr.

ALFRED BALLARD “AL” COX, JR., age 82, of Hurdle Mills, NC passed away Saturday afternoon, January 20, 2024 at WakeMed Raleigh Campus.

Mr. Cox was born January 5, 1942 in Wake County, NC, son of the late Alfred Ballard Cox, Sr. & the late Rosie Viola Patterson Cox.  He was retired from the NC State Highway Patrol, farming, and Northern Telecom, and was a veteran of the US Army.

Al was an avid hunter and enjoyed reading, studying history, reloading ammo, spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and competition shooting with his son Trey.

Surviving are four children, Whitney Cox Sims (Tad) of Charlotte, NC, Joanna Cox Lewis of Garner, NC, Alfred Ballard “Trey” Cox, III (Kat), Autumn Marie Richards (Justin) all of Hurdle Mills, NC, five grandchildren, Morgan Sims Wright (Jeremy), Garrett Michael Lewis (Breanna), Andrew Harris Sims (Madison), Micah Cade Richards, Winter Raven Richards, three great-grandchildren, Jack Andrew Wright, Elizabeth Jane Wright, Charlotte Faye Wright, two brothers, Terry Cox of Angier, NC, Steve Cox of Cary, NC, and sister, Linda Mills of Wilmington, NC.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox is preceded in death by three sisters, Janice Davis, Nancy Clark, and Maxine Hobbs.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2:00 Saturday, January 27, 2024 in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel.  The family will receive friends and guests for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
